Courtier’s Tournament: For Rapier Fighters

THE TOURNAMENT OF THE COURTIER XVI
(A FRIENDLY FIVE-PART COMPETITION FOR GENTLEMEN AND GENTLEWOMEN, BASED UPON THE BOOK OF THE COURTIER BY BALDESSAR CASTIGLIONE)
Rapier Marshal-in-Charge: Lord Bjorn Arnoldsson
Courtier's Tournament Marshals:
Master John Inchingham (inchingham@hotmail.com);
Baron Torquil MacGillavrey (torquilmac@comcast.net).
The Tournament of the Courtier tests many fine things. The ability to entertain, the handsomeness of thy apparaile, the cunningness necessary for chess, and the possession of a silver tongue are all tested. In the past this has been also been combined with a challenge to test everyone’s ability to fence. Such a challenge has one potential flaw however. Someone seeking to become a courtier may not know or realize that they are fighting as a bestial or brutal fighter! It would be a disservice to not use this challenge as a way to help them learn that simply hurling blows without tempo or measure is no way to gain renown in the Court. Thus the format this year will not only be taking into account ones prowess but also their form and grace.
To this end we have invited some guests to view the fighting on that day. There shall be 3 judges who will watch each fight and determine the overall appearance and style that was displayed. This score shall reflect both fighters and will be evenly divided between them with some extra points going towards the winner of the bout. That pair of fighters will then let the next pair take the list. We shall be organizing it such that each fighter will have the same number of fights scored. The number of fights will depend on the turnout that day.
Do you have grace and beauty of motion or do you stumble from place to place? Have you honed your skills in your school of fencing so that your form is not sloppy? Do you have the mental capacity to carry on witty batter with your opponent or the gallery as you fight? Come join us and see how you compare with the other fighters of the Midrealm!
Courtiers are punctual!!!
As the Tournament of the Courtier is a day long process the rapier portion must stay within its allotted time. Thus the judged tournament will begin at 10AM as listed. If you are looking to authorize you will need to find me and some other marshals as soon after site opens (9am) as possible. Otherwise you will need to wait until the lunch break to try authorizing.
Part I: (10:00 AM) "To play well at fense upon all kinds of weapons."
Candidates will be required to show their fencing skill in a list run by Lord Bjorn. Points will be awarded reflecting each candidate's standing at the end of the day's fighting.
Note--fencers who do not wish to be Courtier candidates may still compete in this part of the tournament.
Bardic Competition - 1:00 PM - Open to All
Part II: (1:00 PM) "To be brought to showe his (or her) feates and qualities at the desire and request of others."
Each candidate shall be asked to demonstrate skill at some mode of entertainment of the candidate's choosing (dance, sing, recite a poem, play an instrument, tell a tale, etc.). A candidate who has created an original work, may ask another to perform it.
Part III: "To be handesome and clenly in his (or her) apparaile."
The fencing garb of each candidate will be judged on the basis of comeliness and appropriateness.
Loser's Chess - Open to All - 10:00 AM, Concurrent with Rapier Tourney
Part IV:(10:00 AM) "To be meanly seene in the play at Chestes (chess), and not over cunninge."

Part V:(After Bardic Competition in the PM) "To be well spoken and faire languaged" and "To be no envious or malitious person."

My thanks to Michael who first ran this tournament style at Procrastinators earlier this year. I loved this idea and he graciously allowed me to use it for our event. He deserves all the credit for this wonderful idea that fits so well with the theme of the Tournament of the Courtier.

Arts and Sciences Competition:
A contest shall be held to display the products of the Kingdom's artisans. The theme of this competition will be the number 13, as this is the thirteenth year in which a Grand Pageant has been held in the Barony of Sternfeld. Artisans are requested to bring creations that are linked to the number thirteen in as many myriad and creative manners as can be devised! Documentation of half a page briefly explaining the origins, historical usage, and construction of the entry, as well as the manner in which the theme has been incorporated, is required. Additional documentation is encouraged but optional.
There shall be two prizes awarded to entries in this contest:
The first shall be to that entry selected by a group of judges. The prize is a beautiful walnut-stained bench with built in chest crafted by Baron Christophe Van der Ross.
The second prize will go to that entry which is nominated by popular vote of the populace at large. All members of the populace are encouraged to visit the A&S display throughout the day and vote for their three favorite entries. The prize will be a three-piece set of green-glazed pottery (plate, bowl, and mug) made by Mistress Nonna the Midwife.
In addition, there shall be a secondary category of competition. You see, Lady Odile is from the French court, and when she was told she would be attending a Grand Pageant, she naturally assumed this meant a very BIG pageant, and so she happily devised a contest for the largest A&S entry. Imagine her dismay when she was told by her goodhearted English-speaking friends that in English, 'grand' means 'magnificent,' and not 'large' as she had assumed! In order to placate her, we present her contest as well. The documentation requirements are the same as for the primary contest, although entries in this category need not be linked to the theme of thirteen. Entries may be entered in both competitions, however. There will be plenty of room for displays, but if you come with something unimaginably huge, there is always the possibility it will need to be displayed at an alternate location.
In this second competition, there will be one prize, given to that item which is absolutely largest! The prize will be seven yards of crimson 5.3 oz linen fabric.
Entries will be accepted from 9:00 AM until 12:00 noon, and populace judging will be open between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Entry pick-up will be between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Prizes will be awarded during court.
